IngramSpark vs KDP Print: which distribution wins in 2026?

·10 min read·Distribution

This is framed as a choice far more often than it should be. The two networks serve different buyers, and the standard professional setup uses both — with the settings arranged so they never compete on the same listing.

Where each network actually reaches

KDP Print serves Amazon's own storefronts, which is where the overwhelming majority of consumer print sales happen. IngramSpark feeds roughly 40,000 retailers, wholesalers, libraries and universities — the channel a bookshop or acquisitions librarian orders from.

Royalties and unit economics

On Amazon, KDP Print typically nets more per copy because there is no wholesale discount taken. Through Ingram you set a 40–55% trade discount, which is the price of being orderable by shops at all.

Setup cost, hardcover and returns

KDP has no setup fee; Ingram charges per title and revision but offers a broader trim, paper and hardcover range, plus a returns programme bookshops expect before they will stock a title.

The setup we use

Publish the paperback and ebook through KDP, publish the same ISBN edition through Ingram with expanded distribution disabled on the Amazon side, and route hardcover through Ingram. That gets the retail margin and the trade reach without a duplicate-listing conflict.

This is exactly how our global distribution service configures every title.
